Seven Holiday Railway Displays Rolling Through Philly For The 2016 Holiday Season

All aboard! More than a half dozen Philly-area locations are moving full-steam ahead in setting up majestical railroad tracks for train lovers to check out.

A classic holiday sight, colorful miniature railway displays adorn gardens, markets and parks to delight kiddos and train-enthusiasts alike.

Santa meet-and-greets, light shows, seasonal treats and other festive fun often adds to the merriment of each display, creating an experience full of holiday cheer.

Reading Terminal Holiday Railroad

Every holiday season, Reading Terminal Market, Philadelphia’s indoor haven for all things food, sets up a super-impressive 500-square-foot holiday railroad in its piano court. Guests ooh and aah over the 17 working train lines and miniature scenery of Center City and the countryside, all set up around nearly one-third mile of track.

Morris Arboretum Holiday Garden Railway

Set amid the evergreens, Morris Arboretum’s Holiday Garden Railway showcases a miniature winter wonderland complete with a quarter-mile of model-train track, seven loops and tunnels, 15 rail lines and model trains that cruise past scaled replicas of historic monuments and Philadelphia landmarks adorned with thousands of twinkling lights. On select Fridays, catch special nighttime viewings when white lights bedeck the rails and miniature greens adorn the buildings. (Note that advanced tickets are required.)

Take a ride around the historic Franklin Square on the Lightning Bolt Holiday Express, offering a fantastic way to see the illuminated park, decked out for the Franklin Square Holiday Festival & Electrical Spectacle Holiday Light Show.

Longwood Gardens Railway

No holiday is complete without a visit to Longwood Gardens, where more than 500,000 twinkling lights and spectacular fountain shows compose a brilliant showcase. Young ones (or the young at heart) shouldn’t miss seeing the Christmas lights on the G-scale model train display riding over 450 feet of track located near the Terrace Restaurant. Note that the Garden Railway is outdoors and runs during regular gardens hours, weather permitting.

Brandywine River Museum of Art Railroad

Spread holiday cheer this season at the Brandywine River Museum of Art’s month-long holiday celebration. On view through the first week of 2017, the all-ages Brandywine Christmas railroad display features the popular O-gauge model train display with trains running simultaneously on nearly 2,000 feet of track through a landscape inspired by southeastern Pennsylvania.

All aboard the New Hope & Ivyland Railroad for a holiday train ride with Santa and Mrs. Claus. Lasting for one hour, the holiday excursion invites you to sip hot chocolate and enjoy festive cookies as Santa and Mrs. Claus deliver a special gift to each child on board. Christmas carol sing-alongs will sweeten the ride as the train transports you to the "North Pole."
