Yards Brewing Company Opens New 70,000-Square-Foot Brewery & Taproom In Northern Liberties

Make plans now to check out Yards’ new digs...

Great things are brewing in Northern Liberties: The new headquarters of Philly’s own Yards Brewing Company is now open.

Founded in 1994, Yards has seen awesome growth thanks to its superb line of brews — Philadelphia Pale Ale appears on menus all around town — and the industry rise of craft beer sales.

FAST FACTS

  • The new 70,000-square-foot headquarters of Yards Brewing Company is now open.
  • The taproom is open daily with 20 taps and a full menu by chef Jim Burke.
  • Brewery tours will be limited until construction on the production lines is complete.

From its humble beginnings in a garage in Manayunk to its shiny new home in Northern Liberties, Yards helped ignite a craft beer revolution in Philadelphia and has remained a leader in the Philadephia craft beer scene throughout its more than two decades of brewing sudsy goodness.

The airy new taproom at Yards Brewing Company is now open to the public with 20 tap lines and space for more than 250 guests.

The Brewery

Situated in Northern Liberties on busy Spring Garden Street, less than six blocks from the Liberty Bell and Philadelphia’s Historic District, Yards’ new home continues the brewery’s tradition of embracing a city-center location, making it one of only a few urban regional breweries in the United States.

The 70,000-square-foot facility at 5th and Spring Garden streets also continues Yards’ eco-conscious practices. The brewery is wind-powered and uses reclaimed materials like wooden bowling lanes for its main bar.

Designed by Philadelphia-based architecture firm DIGSAU, the spacious facility offers guests a clear look at the brewing process via large windows revealing the entire operation, from the coming-soon canning line to the only Ziemann Holvrieka brewhouse on the East Coast (which will more than double Yards’ current output).

The taproom, the brewery’s main public attraction, includes an open floor plan that seats more than 250 guests (plus another 200 in the private event space upstairs) and features 25-foot-high ceilings, garage-door windows, an outdoor patio and long community-style tables, as well as a pool table, TVs, dart board and shuffleboard.

Chef Jim Burke’s beer-friendly taproom menu includes excellent snacks, sandwiches, salads and larger plates — like a smoky barbecue platter.

The Taproom

The expansive new space is itself a draw, but most visitors will arrive at Yards with one thing in mind: beer.

The taps at the new brewery will continue to pour Yards’ eight signature beers, a number of seasonals and the Ales of the Revolution line, based on recipes conceived by Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin and George Washington.

In addition to the 20-draft beer list, a full beer-friendly menu by chef Jim Burke is on offer. Chef Burke, a James Beard Award semifinalist and former colleague of such culinary giants as Daniel Boulud and Marc Vetri, has crafted a menu to satisfy both crowds and culinary buffs.

Hungry patrons seeking snacks should try the Reuben fritters, housemade pickles and crab toast with Calabrian chiles. Larger plates include a killer patty melt, roast pork with fermented broccoli rabe, beer-can chicken and a huge barbecue platter.

Yards Brewing Company is now open daily and brewery tours will be offered as soon as construction is fully complete on the production side of the brewery.
