In Philly, an escape to Europe is as simple as heading south to Queen Village where you can sample chef David Ansillʼs simple and elegant euro-influenced small plates at Ansill Food + Wine. While Ansill features small plates designed for sharing, the flavors are anything but small. My girlfriend and I sampled 6 such dishes, each one contained the highest quality ingredients cooked and seasoned to perfection. The roasted beets are sweet and earthy and the grilled romaine is so delicious, you will wonder why you never thought to grill your lettuce. Chef Ansillʼs upscale take on the traditional cheesesteak, the lamb osso bucco sandwich, is so good that I recommend ordering two. If youʼre really feeling adventurous you can even try pigs feet or lambs tongue.

While Ansill has a full bar featuring reasonably priced wines served by the glass or carafe and local beers, Tuesday nights are BYOB with no corkage fee. The mostly wooden and softly lit interior is warm and inviting. The main room features the bar and a view of Bainbridge Street, while the back room features a view of the open kitchen. On my recent visit, Chef Ansill came to our table twice to recommend dishes and see how our meal was.
It was like escaping to Europe, and it tasted great.
