College football is officially back in action in Philadelphia!
For the third consecutive year, Lincoln Financial Field will host the region’s fastest-growing college sports rivalry when Temple and Villanova square off during the third annual Mayor’s Cup on Thursday, September 1.
Thursday’s game is the series’ rubber match after Temple avenged their 2009 loss to Villanova in an exciting finish last year that saw the Owls score nine points in the last three seconds.
Both schools are returning from winning seasons and would love to take the upper-hand in this series, so this year’s game should be another one to remember.
The two rivals have a storied history beyond the Mayor’s Cup, facing each other 30 times throughout the years, including Temple’s first ever game at it’s current home, Lincoln Financial Field. All time, Nova holds a 16-12-2 series advantage.
The 2011 Mayor’s Cup will be the season opener for both schools and fans’ first opportunity to see their teams compete in real game action. Currently, the weather forecast for Thursday night calls for clear skies, a perfect opportunity for tailgaiting!
Tickets are on sale now and available at ticketmaster.com.

Boom. Big time college football in Philadelphia. The Owls will host Penn State at Lincoln Financial Field for the first time since 2007, as the two teams continue their increasingly competitive rivalry. In the past, Philadelphia has lacked big time college football to watch, cheer and get caught up in. That appears to be changing in recent years as Villanova has won a Division 1 AA National Championship and Temple has gone to bowl games. And both teams have been recruited to join the Big East Conference.
In the meantime, we can look forward to this September when there will be a big time college football game at the Linc.
Temple will host Penn State at Lincoln Financial Field on September 17. This a showdown between two schools that both have huge amounts of supporters, alumni and fans in Philadelphia so it’s going to be highly anticipated. And while Penn State is a perennial football power, Temple gets better and better every year and this year has a new coach plus a star running back.
The game continues the rivalry between the two schools and marks the first time the Nittany Lions have played at Lincoln Financial Field since 2007. National powerhouse Penn State has controlled the rivalry as of late, but they will be facing a reinvigorated Temple team looking to improve upon two consecutive winning seasons.
Plus, the game is in September so it will still be nice weather for tailgating. We cant wait to see the the sea of rival red and white supporters converge on Lincoln Financial Field for what is sure to be an awesome football game.
Tickets are on sale now via Ticketmaster.
Also, Temple-Penn State three-game ticket packages are available, which include a lower level ticket to the Penn State game, plus two other 2011 Temple home games (not including Villanova). The three-game ticket package, begins at $90 and can be ordered by calling 215-204-8499; a great way to check out local college football while experiencing a game at Lincoln Financial Field.

Battle of the cheesecakes begins tomorrow at Davio's. (Credit: iStockPhoto)
In the quest to determine which city has the best cheesecake – Philly or New York – Davio’s Philadelphia and Manhattan’s ‘CESCA have declared a friendly “cheesecake war” and challenged each other to a three-day competition.
From Tuesday, July 26 to Thursday, July 28, Davio’s will pit its signature vanilla bean cheesecake with blueberry compote against ‘CESCA’s mascarpone cheesecake with orange cream and orange brittle.
Now here’s the delicious part: for three days, diners at each restaurant will be able to order the competition’s special ‘Cheesecake War Dessert’ — meaning Davio’s will be serving ‘CESCA’s signature mascarpone cheesecake and ‘CESCA will serving Davio’s blueberry specialty — with both desserts accompanied by a comment card for judging.
On July 30, National Cheesecake Day, the restaurants will tally the numbers and announce the winner on their Twitter and Facebook pages.
The battle for cheesecake supremacy runs July 26 though July 28, and as is true with most food competitions, the real winners are the judges. Enjoy.
Cheesecake War
When: July 26-28
Where: Davio’s Steakhouse, 111 S. 17th Street
Cost: The “Cheesecake War” dessert – $10

After almost a two-week break that included the All Star break and then a two-city road trip, the Phillies finally return home to Citizens Bank Park tonight for the first game of a 10 game home-stand.
And not only are the Phillies back in town, but this also means that the new With Love 3-D Art will be back in full effect at Citizens Bank Park.
The new interactive 3-D Art installation is conveniently located just inside the Left Field Gate right at the beginning of Ashburn Alley, where fans attending the game will have the opportunity to take their photo with the 3-D Art as they enter the stadium or as they’re walking around during the game.
A professional photographer is on hand each home game to take a free photograph of any fan and have it posted on the Visit Philly Facebook page. Seriously, it’s a lot of fun: check out the fan photo galleries from opening weekend.
Above, check out a time-lapse video of the 3-D art being installed at Citizens Bank Park and a few of the first fans to strike a pose for the cameras once the art was in place. Look out for a cameo of the Phanatic himself…
Then check out the full galleries of With Love 3-D Art fan photos on Visit Philly’s Facebook page.
And, as always, Go Phillies!
