Painted Bride Quarterly Bookfair for Literacy

The Painted Bride Quarterly is one of the oldest independent literary magazines in the country; a non-profit literary magazine — and it’s housed in town, in Drexel University.

On Wednesday, May 13th, the PBQ is hosting it’s first annual Bookfair for Literacy. The Bookfair will run simultaneously with Drexel University’s Week of Writing, which will bring together regional small presses, academic publishers, and literary magazines. By participating in the The Bookfair you will help fight illiteracy and support PBQ’s efforts to acknowledge the importance of the written word in the digital age.

The PBQ will also sponsor a used book sale with all proceeds donated to Philadelphia Reads, an awesome local literacy group that is dedicated to eradicating children’s illiteracy in Philadelphia. The additional books will be donated to Books Through Bars, an NPO that serves the incarcerated and their families.

During the afternoon, from 12:00pm to 1:30pm, the public is invited to take part in a Speed Editing session, which will have editors from various fields and disciplines, such as journalism, creative and academic writing.

For more information, visit Drexel’s website for a full schedule of Week of Writing events, or contact pbq@drexel.edu to be involved!

Geckos: Tails to Toepads @ Academy of Natural Sciences

5 reasons why geckos are cooler than most of us:

1.) They have night vision.
2.) Most have disposable body parts.
3.) They chirp (“sing”) to communicate with each other.
4.) They defecate on their aggressors as a form of defense.
5.) Their “sticky” toes bend in the opposite direction from our digits, and appear to defy gravity.

This summer, from May 30th through September 7th, lots of live geckos will be invading The Academy of Natural Sciences for their newest exhibit, Geckos: Tails to Toepads. This exhibit will introduce our little friends from the family Gekkonidae to the general public in their naturalistic habitats, and there will be interactive installations dedicated to the 1000+ species.

These little lizards that have been scampering about since the early Cretaceous period– so don’t miss them now! Be sure to hear them, see them, and experience them up close and in person.

Brunch at White Dog Cafe

I am a dedicated Philadelphian Brunch-ee. I rarely look forward to Friday and Saturday nights the same way I look forward to Saturday and Sunday afternoons– mostly because my A.M. includes frittatas and french toast.

With this in mind: The White Dog Cafe is an established lunchtime favorite in University City. But did you know it is a gem in the rocks for a late morning brunch, too?

I ordered the Crème Brulee Brioche French Toast. My favorite part of this dish was an unexpected but delicious surprise that was underneath the neatly cut french toast triangles: Mexican vanilla bean custard. Syrup aside, there were also candied marcona almonds, blackberries, raspberries, sweet sun dried cherries, and organic strawberries delicately placed along my plate. Delicious!

It was hard to pick– mostly because the brunch menu ranges from Smoked Salmon Benedict to Portabello Fries and Prince Edward Island Mussels, and could even accommodate a vegan palette (Sesame Crusted Tofu).

I’m also pleased to say that my entree, including two cups of coffee, was under $15. And did I mention that the White Dog Cafe supports Buy Fresh Buy Local and contributes 20% of pre-tax profit to non-profit projects, each year?

Now I can stomach that!

Brunch is served from 10:30am to 2:30pm on Saturday and Sunday.
