There is certainly no law against girls playing rock and roll -or metal, or twee pop, or hip-hop, or hardcore, or what have you. But there are plenty of hidden impediments. There’s the macho, boys-club vibe at many guitar and drum shops. There’s the pervasive media iconography equating rocking out or plaintively emoting with being a skinny white dude. In 2007, Philadelphia further upped its music scene cred with the debut of the Popped! Music Festival, a three-day event that put a distinctive Philly spin on festivals like Austin’s SXSW. Matt Davis is an accomplished composer, performer and educator. His current project Aerial Photograph combines the intimacy and complexities of small chamber ensemble compositions mixed with elements of the instrumentation and improvisation of jazz. On Saturday, April 19th, Spike Lee will be emceeing a retrospective of his film work, accompanied by a jazz performance from the Terence Blanchard Quintet and special guests, at the Kimmel Center. The event celebrates the music of Lee’s films, inlucing Malcolm X, The 25th Hour, Inside Man, and more. Terence Blanchard, Lee’s long-time musical collaborator, will lead his quintet, along with a full 20 piece orchestra.
