We know you love the Headhouse Square Farmers Market, as we see lots of you down there on Saturdays and Sundays with bags full of local produce, meats, cheeses and eggs. And we’re guessing that there are more than a few pancake fans in the crowd. Well, on Saturday, June 13th from 9:30 a.m. until 11:30 a.m., we suggest you marry your love for Headhouse with that part of you that appreciates a good pancake.
That’s right, the market’s holding a fundraiser, and the star of the show will be stack upon stack of gorgeous pancakes, made from locally sourced ingredients by chef Mitch Prensky and the staff of Supper restaurant and Global Dish Caterers. For just $20 (kids under 10 eat for $5), you’ll be able to chow down on all the hearty ‘cakes you can eat and support a worthy cause at the same time. You can order tickets through the website or show up the morning of with cash in hand (we suggest buying your seats in advance though, as the event could sell out).
See you at the breakfast table!

Salad served at last month’s event held at Langostino Restaurant. Mmm!
Don’t feel like cooking dinner every night? On May 18th you don’t have to. Instead, have some of Philly’s top culinary talents cook for you at ChefAMe. All you have to do is watch in awe and secretly wish you could make these decadent dishes at home for yourself. Which you know you’ll never be able to, so please, leave it to the professionals.
This year, those professionals will be Chef Alyssa Shilliday, and chef turned writer turned chef Felicia D’Ambrosio. Alyssa has cooked at several restaurants including the Olive Garden, World Cafe Live and Cuba Libre. She is an aspiring restaurateur and her specialty is pastries. Yum! Felicia writes for City Paper’s food and drinks blog, Meal Ticket, and she’s apparently as good with food as she is with her laptop.
Each chef will prepare 3 dishes and one dessert for a tasting-style meal. This means a better variety and more food than last year’s event. The menu will be available in advance at www.openchefame.com.
Grab a $35 ticket for Open ChefAMe taking place at the Dark Horse Pub in Society Hill. You cannot pay at the door, so get tickets soon! And 20% of the profits made at this event will be donated to a charity in the area, which will be announced by Alyssa and Felicia at the end of the night. Everybody wins!

I grew up on the Beatles. The first CD I ever owned was Help! — a present from my dad on my 11th birthday. By the time I was able to identify the band on the radio, I was firmly convinced that the Beatles were the best thing to have ever happened to rock n’roll – WAY better than the Rolling Stones – a belief I still hold today.
There’s no current band that comes even close to rivaling the Beatles in terms of popularity, influence and mass-hysteria. To grow up in the late 60s was to live through Beatlemania, a rare cultural phenomenon that can never be replicated (although Potter-mania comes close).
It can, however, be recreated. And such is the stated goal of She Loves You! – an epic concert and multimedia extravaganza, featuring Beatlemania cast members, live Beatles songs and a cornucopia of advertisements, newsreel clips, television footage and more all about the fab four.
The show is divided into two acts: 1964-1966 and 1967-1969. I’m an Abbey Road girl myself, so I’m glad to know this will be closing out the show. I’m also psyched for the venue – the Society Hill Playhouse – a beautiful, Victorian theater that seats just 223 – intimate enough to feel like you’re really part of the action. The show’s producers recommend guests wear ‘60s attire to the premiere – I already have my outfit picked out.

Last week, the Fringe Festival hit Philly hard with a barrage of theater performances, ranging from traditional to avant-garde, from musical to monologue — hell, from english to slovak. Les Femmes lands somewhere in the middle, mixing historic presentation with theatrical performance, leading the audience through four famous personalities from the first half of the last century.
Starting with Marion Davies, Jenelle Sosa mixes sass and subtlty when describing Ms. Davies experiences (in character, of course) with the first “talkies” and other such anachronisms of the time. Coco Chanel saunters angrily around the stage in the next scene, cursing her friend (offstage) in disagreement, all the while speaking to the audience directly, as if we were old hat. Ms. Chanel, portrayed by Les Femmes writer Kathy Steel, was assuredly the finest act of the show, though repeat performances by both actresses as different, larger-than-life personalities clearly rounded out the just over an hour production.
Les Femmes is produced by the Starving Actors Society and was performed in the Red Room at the Society Hill Playhouse (507 South 8th Street) as wel as the Walking Fish Theater (2509 Frankford Ave.) during the 2008 Philadelphia Fringe Festival.

You know, there are a lot of reasons why I like the Historic Philadelphia Trolley Loop. Sure, it’s incredibly cheap, drops you off at many different popular historic spots, and operates all day… but most importantly, sitting on it scored me this sweet picture. That’s me in the second row, in the back, making the trolley all the more good looking.
But seriously - if you’re visiting Philadelphia and feel the urge to explore the historic district, this is a great way to see it. The loop began its second year of service the first weekend of May, allowing passengers to ride for just $2 a day, hopping on and off at ten different stops through out Historic Philadelphia.
Independence Mall, Society Hill, Old City, Franklin Square, Liberty Bell Center, Penn’s Landing… yup, you can visit all of those. You can catch the trolley every 15 minutes from 10am to 7:30pm, and your $2 pass is good for the entire day! On board the trolley, you can watch a video about the area, hosted by FOX 29’s Good Day Philadelphia co-hosts.
Want some more info on the trolley and exploring Historic Philadelphia? Sure you do. Visit www.gophila.com/history. Enjoy your trip on the trolley. Maybe you’ll be lucky enough to get a picture like mine.

Unlike Oedipus, Jay Nachman didn’t marry his mother and kill his father. Instead, he took the stance that the pen is indeed mightier than the sword and wrote a touchingly deep and vividly personal account about his mother’s passing entitled I’m Not Oedipus. But he doesn’t want you to feel sorry for him. Not for one second. It happened five years ago.
Jay’s funny-sad-funny-sad and then funny again story is a roller coaster ride full of oh yeah’s and oh my’s. “Many people have drawn parallels to their own life experiences after seeing the show and it has an almost cathartic effect on some of the audience,” explains Nachman. This Old City resident playwright/performer has managed to make serious hard lemonade out of lemons. The show weaves a quirky and enlightening tapestry of religion, sex, love, loss and rock-n-roll (Springsteen style). The hour-long play was a highlight of the 2006 Philadelphia Fringe Festival (Broad Street Review) and it’s back for just three nights.
When he’s not at his day job, PR Manager for the National Museum of American Jewish History (5th and Market Sts. for now), he makes sure to find time to devote to his passion – holding up a mirror to his personal life experiences. Don’t take my word for it… go see Jay shed light on a dark subject matter. He really shines and uses humor to underscore life’s absurdities. The one-man show is an entertaining amalgamation of acting, storytelling and standup bits drawn from his not so distant past. Because of the comical and memorable anecdotes told in a lighthearted fashion, audiences suddenly forget what the play is sort of based on… death. It appeals to a wide range of people. When asked if his mother would like his show, he said “Of course, I’m her son!” His father has in fact seen it and enjoyed it.
So what happens when a father quickly begins dating soon after the death of his wife while others were still grieving around him? Find out and come to the show. Tickets are only $15 and that includes a drink which gets our vote for great value date of the week.

Mother’s Day. Almost here. We already gave you one suggestion, a Mother’s Day mural tour, and now, thanks to the Society Hill Dance Academy, we have another lovely event to offer up.
SHDA will have free group dance lessons on Mother’s Day in support of the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure. Do check out the Race for the Cure website for more information on the fundraiser. The class will occur during the post-race celebration at Head House Square. No reservations are needed. Just walk in and waltz out.
There are three dance lessons going on between 11am and 1pm, during which you and your favorite lady can learn to salsa, breakdance, and ballroom dance (waltz / foxtrot).

I don’t know about you, but I’m tired of walking down the street, minding my own business, and then BAM! getting served by a bunch of hip talking, smooth moving break dancers. I mean seriously, it is so embarrassing.
Well, thanks to the awesome people over at the Society Hill Dance Academy, this situation can now be a thing of the past.
Starting on June 2nd and running through June 23rd, the Society Hill Dance Academy will be offering break dancing lessons. It’s a four week, Saturday morning class. And don’t worry! They aren’t going to make you spin on your head. This is a beginners class that will go over the basics of break dancing.
All ages welcome and no experience (or partner) is necessary. Check out their website for more details, along with some more great events.

Friday the 13th is upon us! Oooh, spooky!
What better way to celebrate this universally ominous day then to learn the Thriller dance.
The Society Hill Dance Academy is holding a Thriller dance party on Friday, April 13th. Take a trip back to the 1980s with the Academy’s friendly staff and learn the hot moves from your favorite (at least it should be) Micheal Jackson song. Night creatures and demons are welcome!
Kicking off at 7:45pm, lessons will only run you $10 a person. Complimentary Zombie Punch will be served. Who knows, maybe you’ll even pick the lyrics to the verses of the song, because honestly, I don’t know a single person who knows anything outside of chorus.
Don’t miss this master class in the art of 80s dance.

One particularly festive St. Patty’s day I amused myself—and about 100 bar patrons—by busting out an impromptu tap dance to the Mummers. What I lacked in skill I made up for in passion, but this little episode convinced me to learn some real moves from a beginner’s tap class at the Society Hill Dance Academy. Now I’m no Savion Glover, but I have learned the Timestep and the Shim Sham… and that anybody can shake it like a Polaroid picture with professional guidance for only ten bucks at the Society Hill Dance Academy’s drop-in classes.
Feeling a little fancypants? Take beginner’s ballroom. Feeling exotic? Take salsa. Can’t shake your thang without a cocktail in your veins? Then the Thursday Night Dance Party is better for you, where wine and cheese comes along with dance instructions from 9:15 to 11 p.m. Once you try it, you just might get hooked on the social atmosphere of this South Street Head House studio, where a big dog named Lulu mingles with people of all ages doing the step-ball-change in tap class and the pop-and-lock in hip hop. It’s good (sometimes sweaty) fun.
