This week’s episode of Studioscopic features Philadelphia artist Kukuli Velarde. Velarde’s intensely provocative work references pre-columbian imagery of her native Peru to explore issues of colonization as well as personal issues such as her own aging. Known and respected as a ceramics artist, she has lately exploring herself as a painter, a thing that Velarde once thought she would never do again. Filmmaker David Kessler takes you into her Norris Square studio.

Don’t worry, Studioscopic is still here! We had a little email / blog trouble here in the uwishunu office, so David Kessler’s awesome video on Zoe Cohen got posted a little late, but trust us, it is worth the wait. Just click on the image, and it’ll take you to a page on Blip.tv, with the video.
Kessler explains that “Zoe Cohen has two major strains in her artwork. What she refers to as her “studio work” consisting on drawings made with non-traditional medium and her “public participatory work”, facilitating means of communication in public spaces.”
You can visit her on the web at www.zoecohen.com. Be sure to catch up on previous episodes of Studioscopic here on uwishunu!
Welcome to another episode of Studioscopic! Today, David Kessler introduces us to sculptor and printmaker, Norm Paris, showing you his recent sports related work including the sculpture installation ‘Michael Jordan Saves the World’, in which 23 Jordans (complete with vintage Air Jordan shoes) are attempting to catch 24 falling bombs. Paris has a lot of interesting things to say about sports heroes (including Ahhhrnold), so you’ll definitely want to check this one out.
It’s Thursday, which means it’s time for another episode of Studioscopic by David Kessler.
Kessler meets up with brothers Steven and Billy Blaise Dufala during their show at the Fleisher Art Memorial. They talk about working together as both artists and brothers, and how they use humor in their sculptures and events. My favorite part? The ice cream tank built in Space 1026… that they actually served ice cream out of.
You might recognize Billy from the Anti Records band, Man Man.
