Philly Fringe
When John Beauregard, one of the four members of Green Chair Dance Group, was in his second year as an engineering student at Swarthmore College, he saw a performance by the Silesian Dance Theatre. It was the first professional dance performance he ever attended, yet he was so awed and inspired by what he saw that he knew immediately he had to start dancing. Six years later, John and his colleagues in Green Chair–Sarah Gladwin Camp, Hannah de Keijzer, and Gregory Holt (all graduates of Swarthmore as well)–retain that sense of wonder about the possibilities of dance.
In its fiifth year of existence and making its fourth appearance at the Philly Fringe, Green Chair’s four members choreograph, dance, and produce as a collective. Their performances are accessible and thought-provoking, with moments of drama, humor, and poignancy. Marked by a fascination with the dichotomy between the formal, vituostic movements of classical dance and the pedestrian movements of everyday life, Green Chair’s work challenges us as viewers to think about the way we move through the world.
This theme is particularly salient in this year’s piece, Dances for the Naked Eye, which uses gesture, twisted balances, and highly physical movement to explore human motion and relationships. The performance is sure to entertain and provoke.
