American college students love to backpack through Europe. So why should everyone be surprised when Europeans follow that same route here? Both parities like to travel on the cheap, and paying $180 an evening plus tax doesn’t sound too accommodating. And so, the search began for a hostel in Philadelphia.

Surprisingly, there are only three locations which are scattered throughout this city. Many Philly insiders know of Bank Street in Old City and the extraordinary Chamounix Mansion in Fairmount Park but the Loftstel has slipped under their radar. For one, there is absolutely no signage on their doorway and they would like to keep it that way. In fact, there is a strong belief in keeping a paperless trail. No brochures or rack cards because everything is handled online.

They have a 24hr check in time which makes that 3am arrival + jet lag sound a little more pleasant. This is no ordinary hostel. Not when the living room has an Nintendo Wii. Bowling anyone? After building up a sweat from using the Wii, there’s no need to dig for quarters since their washer and dryer are free!

Located at 4640 Spruce Street, this 4 story row home can comfortably fit 27/excluding the staff who have been known to give up their room for the sake of a guest. Feel free to make yourself at home because the average stay is 5 weeks. Students, it’s only $35 a night with, of course, a student id, and $55 for those who have long since finished school!

If the location might see a bit far on a Philadelphia map, it is very accessible by Septa and a new location opened up in May, just a short walk from away the Art Museum and the Philadelphia Zoo.
