I always find myself asking, “What is going to be the next exhibit at the Lorenzo Homar Gallery?” And just for a quick history lesson, Taller’s Lorenzo Homar Gallery bears the name of one of Puerto Rico’s greatest graphic visual artists and is the region’s only art gallery dedicated to Latin American and Caribbean Art.

Well, starting May 9th, 2008, Taller Puertorriqueño, Inc. is proud to present the work of Brooklyn-based artist Miguel Luciano, in a solo show of works produced between 1998 and 2008. Born in Puerto Rico, Luciano received his BFA from the New World School of the Arts in Miami, FL and an MFA from the University of Florida at Gainesville, FL.

Throughout the exhibit, Luciano’s work addresses playful and painful exchanges between Puerto Rico and the United States, questioning a colonial relationship that still exists and “problematizing” the space between both cultures. At the exhibit, visitors will be able to interact with his 3-D constructions and a slot machine focusing on the effects of materialism on our psyches. Luciano reinvents the images of our youth, and by telling alternative stories, he challenges the viewer to see them in a new context.

This exhibit will run through July 19, 2008.
