Retail Roundup: Our Top Picks For Where To Pick Up Winter Necessities, From Warm Sweaters And Scarves To Cashmere Socks And Sturdy Boots

Philadelphia boutiques have all you need to keep warm this winter, from fuzzy scarves at Addiction Studios to Wooden Ships brand mittens convertible for using your phone, at SA VA. (Right photo courtesy Addiction Studios, left courtesy Wooden Ships)

Now that the thermometer has finally caught up with the calendar, you may need a couple of extra layers of clothing to keep you warm.

In addition, it doesn’t hurt to complement the cozy scarves and sweaters with locally made and stocked beauty products (for men and women both) that keep you hydrated this winter.

Here are our top picks for winter-perfect, locally sourced fashion and beauty necessities (including a great uwishunu-readers-only-deal!):

MOKO

• Treat yourself to an Ancient Herbal Oatmeal Marble Stone Facial at MOKO. It’s an Indian tradition that uses organic oatmeal, herbs, oil and warmed marble stones. Normally $150, Uwishunu readers who print this out and take to MOKO from January 10-24 can take advantage of it for only $125!

• MOKO also offers customized jojoba oils for your skin, hair and body. Let MOKO’s technicians blend jojoba with essential oils suited for your specific needs.

Scarlett Alley

• While the last thing you may want to do in cold weather is go barefoot, you may reconsider that once you hear about Barefoot Dreams, a line of oh-so-warm robes, throws and shawls. The long-ribbed cozy, in particular, is like the “ultimate snuggie.”

• Layering is especially important in winter and Yala Bamboo clothing — specifically the leggings and undershirts — are perfect underneath dresses, skirts, pants and itchy wool sweaters.

Hat Attack earmuffs are knit with rabbit fur and will protect your ears from frostbite and keep you looking super cute.

• To keep your body soft, try Fresh Seaberry Restorative Body Cream, which is a great restorative winter skin remedy.

DesignPhiladelphia: Arcadia And Bus Stop Boutiques Team Up To Host A Launch Party For The “Faces Of Philly” Look Book, Tonight, October 20

Philadelphia boutiques Arcadia and Bus Stop love to collaborate. Not only do they share their clientele, but they have a common mission to bring the best hard-to-find eco-chic fashions to Philly.

Tonight, Thursday, October 20, from 6-9 p.m., they’re hosting a great joint event: a launch party for their look book titled “Faces of Philly.” This combined effort, part of DesignPhiladelphia, showcases the two boutiques’ picks of the hottest apparel and shoes from both shops modeled by none other than their very own customers.

Each model in the look book shares her personal story, including her style inspiration, which helps to play an integral part in making up the city’s design as well as its diverse culture.

During the party at Arcadia’s Northern Liberties location, Bus Stop’s pop-up shop will be on-hand with the latest shoe styles. Reps from both boutiques will be available to help you create your own autumn look from head-to-toe.

With every purchase at the event, customers will receive a free copy of Faces of Philly. It’s enough to put a smile on any face.

Three Sirens Boutique To Host A Fall Open House This Friday, October 21 To Celebrate The New Season, New Styles And A New Owner

Whether gossamer, bejeweled, printed or tailored, Three Sirens has something to suit your fancy.

Old City boutique Three Sirens is hosting an open house on Friday, October 21, from 5-9 p.m. to celebrate the cool (literally) new season, some great new styles and a lovely new owner.

Emma Carpenter, whose lifelong dream was to own a boutique, had recently moved here from New York, where she worked for some of the top fashion companies. She was shopping at her favorite boutique (Three Sirens) when she happened to mention her aspiration to then-owner Amy Nanos.

Serendipity was on Carpenter’s side because Nanos just so happened to be looking for a buyer of her shop; she was in the process of moving out of state. Carpenter went ahead and made her dream come true.

In honor of this auspicious trifecta (season, style, owner), Three Sirens will serve light refreshments to customers as they shop for great new fall fashions from Press, RD Style, Gracia, Bella Luxx and Minuet. There will also be a pop-up shop from Bus Stop Shoes, who will offer a big selection of hot heels and boots to compliment any outfit.

So be sure to stop by Three Sirens this Friday. Emma Carpenter can’t wait to meet you.

When: Friday, October 21, 5-9 p.m.

People of Ethiopia Exhibit @ the Bus Stop Boutique

Photography On Display @ the Bus Stop Boutique

Now, through May 28th, Bus Stop is hosting the People of Ethiopia Exhibit, a photographic glimpse into the lives of the country’s people. The exhibit displays the works of Alden Blyth, a local architect who focuses his practice on low-income, inner-city housing. Blyth, who became fascinated by the people of Ethiopia during his travels throughout the country, captures a culture with honesty and integrity in his photographs hung along the walls of the boutique.

The 26 photos pull viewers into intimate moments of the exhibit’s subjects. Amongst the colorful, breath-taking photos with a vibrant Ethiopian backdrop, you’ll face the candid life of various tribe members and experience special events like wedding negotiations and church holiday services.

Oliberté Footwear & Photographs @ Bus Stop

Feel like taking a piece of this exhibit home? All photos are on sale for under $100– even when framed and matted. Want to walk out with even more? In concurrence with the exhibit, the Bus Stop is selling Oliberté Footwear, eco-ethical urban footwear made with leather from Ethiopia and–a first for footwear–natural rubber from Liberia.

For under $100, you can help create and sustain more jobs for inhabitants of Ethipoia. The shoes, which are only sold in small, socially-conscious boutiques like Bus Stop, are comfortable and stylish.

Though the shoes may stay, the exhibit ends with a closing reception on May 28th from 5:30-8:30 p.m.

Warehouse Sale @ Bus Stop Boutique

Bus Stop Boutique's storefront window

Bus Stop Boutique, my favorite little shoe store in Queen Village, is throwing their first ever warehouse sale this week, all in the name of charity and great prices.

Despite the large selection at the boutique, Bus Stop actually has a warehouse, and it is crammed with winter shoes, boots, and more. The owner, Elena, is dishing out savings of up to 75% off on designer styles from Farylrobin, Terra Plana, Lovely People, F-Troupe, United Nude, and Corso Como.

Best part about the sale? A portion of proceeds will be donated to the American Red Cross Haiti Relief Fund.

The warehouse sale goes down this Thursday, January 28th, and runs through the 31st.

Please note that this sale is not at Bus Stop, but at an old fabric shop down the road (727 S. 4th Street) from the boutique.

Warehouse Sale Hours:
Thursday, January 28th, 11am – 6pm
Friday, January 29th, 11am – 7pm
Saturday, January 30th, 11am – 6pm
Sunday, January 31st, 12pm – 5pm
