Center City District Releases New Report On The Ongoing Growth Of Sidewalk Cafes In Philadelphia; Take Advantage Of Today’s Beautiful Weather And Dine Outside

Center City District released a new report on the continued increase in sidewalk cafes in Philadelphia, which have increased by 241% over 2001, emphasizing how important outdoor dining is to Center City's vibrancy and overall appeal. (Photo by G. Widman for GPTMC)

Coming on the heels of our roundup of heated outdoor dining, Center City District has released its 11th annual report on outdoor cafes. And the news is awesome.

The 2011 report (PDF) on outdoor cafes, counted in July, shows a 10% increase in the number of outdoor cafes since 2010, for a record 235 separate locations in the Center City Core, which is between Pine and Vine Streets and from the Delaware River to 22nd Street.

This number represents 241% more cafes than the 69 that existed in summer of 2001, the first year CCD counted outdoor cafes.

CCD also counted outdoor cafes from Pine to South Streets and between the Delaware River and 24th Street, and found there were 38 in this area, a 3% increase over 2010, bringing the entire number of outdoor restaurants in Center City to 273. Check out a cool visual chart of the growth below.

The success of these al fresco restaurants and cafes in Center City are a strong indicator of the continued growth of Center City’s economic health. Center City has seen a 10.2% increase in the downtown’s residential population between 2000 and 2010, as more and more young professionals and empty-nesters have been choosing downtown as their preferred place to live.

Regardless of the number-crunching, we’re thrilled that sidewalk seating continues to grow in numbers and popularity.

Because as we’ve said before, we’re huge fans of outdoor dining. It’s an awesome amenity, whether on a breezy summer evening or a cool fall day.

As for today’s lovely weather? There are outdoor dining options galore. See you out there!

The Phillies And Mural Arts Team Up To Design A New Eight-Story Mural To Be Installed Along The Schuylkill River In 2012

The 3,750-square foot image is set to be completed next summer, and will feature more than 30 prominent players from the team's record-long history — and, of course, the Phillie Phanatic. (Photo courtesy Phillies, Copyright Mural Arts Program)

Today the Mural Arts Program and the Phillies unveiled plans for a massive new mural celebrating the history of Phillies baseball in Philadelphia.

Towering almost eight stories high, The Phillies Mural will be located in Center City on the face of a building at 24th & Walnut Streets. The building is located prominently along the Schuylkill Banks at the base of the Walnut Street Bridge, facing the Schuylkill River and I-76 Schuylkill Expressway for thousands of daily passersby to see.

The 3,750-square foot image was designed by David McShane, the award-winning artist for the Mural Arts Program, and a self-proclaimed lifetime Phils fan. McShane’s impressive artistic history includes the creation of more than 75 murals throughout Philadelphia, and includes baseball-themed murals “Tribute to Jackie Robinson” in North Philly, and “Philadelphia Stars: A Tribute to Negro League Baseball” in West Philly.

The mural (see above; also see a close-up view below) will feature more than 30 prominent players depicting historical moments from the team’s record-long history, including the 1980 and 2008 World Series championships.

Plus, The Phillies Mural includes space for one more player, to be chosen by fans via online voting on phillies.com. Details on the final player vote will be forthcoming in the upcoming weeks.

Said Mayor Michael A. Nutter, “There is nothing we enjoy more in Philadelphia than our sports teams, and this mural will share our love for the Phillies with everyone who visits.”

And Jane Golden, Executive Director of the Mural Arts Program, said, “With over 3,500 murals to date that the Mural Arts Program has created, there are few that will stir the passion of such a wide variety of Philadelphians. Hopefully this project will turn sports fans into art fans as David McShane brings the history of Philadelphia’s baseball to life in Center City.”

Our passion is certainly stirred. The mural is set to be completed in the summer of 2012, and will include include numerous community paint days, so you can take part in its creation.

We can’t wait to see this project come to life! See below for a full list of images to be included in the mural, as well as a close-up on the design.

Philadelphia Ranked As The 5th Most Walkable City In The U.S.

Philadelphia's walkability is one of its great strengths and the city continues to build on its pedestrian friendliness with more improvements, like those along the Delaware River Waterfront and the new Race Street Pier. (Photo by R. Kennedy for GPTMC)

In its first national ranking since 2008, Walk Score has just released its new rankings of America’s most walkable cities and neighborhoods for 2011.

And thanks to its eminently walkable, easy-to-follow street grid, Philadelphia came in at #5, behind only New York, San Francisco, Boston and Chicago. And ahead of cities like Seattle, Washington D.C., Atlanta, Miami, Denver, San Diego, and Los Angeles.

Walk Score rated the walkability of 2,500 cities and 10,000 neighborhoods across America — Walk Score’s walkability ranking is the only national, quantitative ranking of walkability in the United States. Cities and neighborhoods are ranked on a scale of 0-100, with locations receiving a score of 90-100 deemed a “Walkers’ Paradise.”

Philadelphia earned an overall score of 74, the third highest score of a city with more than a million people, behind only New York and Chicago.

Leading the way for Philadelphia were the neighborhoods of Center City East and Center City West, which both pulled in Walk Scores of 97, classifying Center City as a “Walkers’ Paradise.” So congrats to Rittenhouse Square, Fitler Square, Graduate Hospital, Washington Square West, Midtown Village, Old City, Society Hill, etc; we always knew you were extremely walkable and know we have proof.

Other Philly neighborhoods that earned a score of 90 or above include University City, Bella Vista, Hawthorne, Queen Village, Pennsport, Girard Estates, and Cedar Park. You can see a full list of the ratings for all the Philadelphia neighborhoods on WalkScore, complete with a heat map of Philadelphia visualizing the areas with higher and lower walkability. (An image of the heat map is also appended below.)

Meanwhile, Walk Score is also holding a public vote of the most walkable cities by allowing people to cast their vote for their favorite walkable city via Facebook. Go to their rankings page to vote and click “Like” next to Philadelphia to vote for Philly.

Walkable neighborhoods are important for a number of reasons, not the least of which is walkable neighborhoods leading to happier people. Other benefits of walkability include:

• Homes in walkable neighborhoods, on average, are worth more than those in less walkable neighborhoods.
• Homes with easy access to public transit and nearby amenities save more energy and money than an Energy Star home in a conventional suburban development.
• The average resident of a walkable neighborhood weighs eight pounds less than someone who lives in a sprawling neighborhood.

Even on an extremely hot day like today, it’s nice to be able to pause and appreciate being able to walk pretty much everywhere in and around Center City and several other parts of Philadelphia.
