Visit PA is once again offering a one-day only PA Groundhog Day Foursquare Badge on Thursday, February 2.
The Groundhog Day Badge was one of last year’s most popular Foursquare badges. In a single day, it was unlocked by 27,846 users (!!), more than any other partner badge at the time.
The Groundhog Day badge is particularly special because it’s available worldwide. Punxsutawney Phil resides in the Pennsylvania Wilds and is the only weather-forecasting groundhog. Everyone in the world gets a chance to think about Pennsylvania — and visiting here — for one day.
All you have to do to earn the exclusive PA Groundhog Day 2012 badge is follow VisitPA on Foursquare and “check in” to “shout” the word “groundhog” on February 2. A shout is Foursquare lingo for a status update or tweet.
A Webcast of the Groundhog Day festivities will be available online, including links to Punxsutawney Phil-related videos on YouTube.
Here’s hoping Phil doesn’t see his shadow and we have an early spring in Philadelphia.

Visit Philly, Philadelphia’s Official Visitor Site and our flagship website, now has its own branded page on Foursquare, the location-based social networking website and game.
This means that Visit Philly is no longer just another user on Foursquare. We now have a our own page with a direct URL right to it so that Foursquare users can access our “tips” on locations, make “to-do lists” based on the tips to help them experience the city, and “check in” using their phones at the venues they’re interested in to earn points and “badges,” all in one convenient virtual spot.
You can also now “follow” Visit Philly — and importantly, our tips — without having to wait for us to accept your friend request. It’s just another effort we’re making to keep you informed about and engaged in the city.
Bonus: Philadelphia’s social media-savvy Mayor Michael Nutter (@Michael_Nutter) is helping to kick off the launch of the new page.
Here’s the deal: The Foursquare “Mayor” of the Independence Visitor Center at noon on April 30 will get a personal message from Mayor Nutter via Twitter. (Foursquare mayorships are awarded to visitors with the most “check ins” at a venue, in this case the Independence Visitor Center, in the 60 days prior to April 30. You can “check in” once per day.)
In the meantime, check out Visit Philly on Foursquare to make your exploration of Philadelphia and The Countryside fun, easy and interesting. And be sure to leave some of your own insider tips along the way!

Last March, PYT played host to the first-ever Foursquare Swarm in the Philadelphia area. For that event, they had more than 50 users all checking into Foursquare at the same time. Now they’re upping the ante and are trying to create a Super Swarm. To pull it off, they’ll need to have more than 250 all checking in at the same time and same location.
To this end, PYT has joined up with Vitamain Water, Geekadelphia and Radio 104.5 to present the first ever meet-up for the Foursquare Super Swarm Badge. The Super Swarm gathering is at 4 p.m. outside or inside PYT, just before 104.5′s free OK GO concert at the Piazza at Schmidt’s.
There are free T-Shirts for the first 300 check-ins, courtesy of Vitamin Water. The shirts say, “I went to Philly Super Swarm 2010 & all I got was this lousy T-Shirt.” You know you want it!
