Tavern 17 In The Radisson Plaza-Warwick Hotel Offers Big Portions, Happy Hour Seven Nights A Week And New Monthly Rotating Chef’s Specials

Tavern 17 is now offering chef's dinner specials: an entree and a side for each night of the week. (Photo courtesy Tavern 17)

Tavern 17, located in the Radisson Plaza-Warwick Hotel in Rittenhouse, is that rare breed of hotel restaurants: actually great all on its own.

Comfortable and unpretentious, the place puts an elegant, leather-and-wood spin on the classic tavern, with 170 seats set against a background of vintage timber flooring, candlelight, and shades of cream, cinnamon and chocolate. The restaurant offers free wireless for the business set and travelers, but those only looking for a delicious, relaxed, affordable meal can dine alongside just as comfortably.

The kitchen uses fresh, local and organic ingredients whenever possible. Portions are extremely sizable (a rarity in the fine dining milieu), like the Big “O” Stuffed Squash overflowing with spinach and roasted tomato risotto. New since November, the chef is offering a special entree and side for each day of the week, refreshed on a monthly basis.

Also unusual: “17:00 Hour” happy hour specials seven nights a week.

All of this means you have no excuse for not stopping into Tavern 17 for breakfast, brunch, lunch, dinner, happy hour, or even when your dog is hungry (“Canine Delights” menu).

Upcoming Meet the Cheesemaker Happy Hours at the Fair Food Farmstand

From the May 2010 Meet the Cheesemaker happy hour (photo by M. McClellan)

We’ve dished about the Meet the Cheesemaker happy hours at the Fair Food Farmstand before. The concept is simple. They invite some of the best cheesemakers from around the region, and we all stand around, eating cheese, sampling beer and talking about how it was all made. Happily, there are several of these fun afternoon tasting sessions coming up in the next month.

On November 19 cheesemakers Jay and Emily Montgomery from Calkins Creamery in the Poconos will be slicing and chatting at 4 p.m.. They’ll have their funky raw cow milk brie (it’s called Noble Road) and a beer washed small round named Cowtipper. The Foodery will be pouring Hops from the Hood, a special from Philadelphia Brewing Company brewed with local Greensgrow Farm hops. This beer is a very limited brew, so make sure to get a sip while the getting is good.

On December 10 local cheese evangelist Madame Fromage will be teaming up with the Farmstand for a Yuletide Cheeseplate Celebration. Festivities begin promptly at 6 p.m. Come taste, learn and explore some of Madame Fromage’s favorite holiday cheeses.

December 17 brings local cheese vets Birchrun Hills into town from bucolic Chester County. The Miller family have been hand crafting some of Philadelphia’s favorite delicious and ever-so-slightly wacky cheese for many a year now. They include the creamy and dreamy Birchrun Blue, the ripe and very ready Fat Cat and the petite washed-rind Red Cat. Victory Brews will be poured.
