Mark your calendars, cocktail enthusiasts! On Monday, September 13 Art in the Age will be hosting a SNAP Cocktail Competition at Liberties Walk in Northern Liberties. Festivities begin at 7 p.m. sharp and will take place rain or shine.
Mixologists from fifteen area bars and restaurants (including Adsum, Valanni and Village Whiskey) will be shaking and stirring up the very best SNAP cocktails they can muster. SNAP is an 80 proof, certified organic spirit that is derived from pure cane sugar and features cinnamon, cloves, rooibos tea and fresh ginger.
The event will be judged by the City Paper’s Drew Lazor, Master Sommelier Melissa Monosoff and William Grant & Sons Portfiolio Ambassador, Charlotte Voisey. Cocktails will be judged on taste, originality and presentation. The event is open to the public and will also feature $5 SNAP and ROOT cocktails from Bar Ferdinand and El Camino.
If you plan on attending, please RSVP by emailing Stephanie at stephanie@artintheage.com.

This Friday, September 3rd, Penn Environment will be hosting a free screening of the documentary Gasland at The Piazza at Schmidts. The film chronicles the increase of natural gas drilling in our state and the ways in which that extraction is effecting drinking water, the environment and the health of individuals who live in proximity to the drilling.
The event opens at 8 p.m. and the screening promptly at 9 p.m. If you plan on attending, please let the organizers know with your RSVP.
While you’re at The Piazza, makes sure to check out the Burter of the Week at PYT. It’s a Texas BBQ Burger made from grilled pork that’s topped with homemade spicy slaw and Texas BBQ sauce. Sounds pretty good to us!

Clockwise from left: Chef Shola Olunloyo, skate and gazpacho (photos courtesy of Speck)
For years now, Chef Shola Olunloyo has been one of Philadelphia’s most acclaimed chefs. There’s just been one problem. Until now, the opportunities to eat his food have been few as he hasn’t yet has his own place. Finally, this fall Chef Olunloyo will be opening his own restaurant, called Speck.

Speck will be located in Northern Liberties, at The Piazza at Schmidts and it will feature progressive new American food and a carefully curated wine, beer and cocktail list. For diners looking for an even more exciting mealtime experience, there will also be a eight-seat chef’s counter that will feature special, nine-course chef’s tasting menus.

Top: toast, Bottom: corn soup
Thanks to its positioning on The Piazza, diners will be able to choose between eating in the sleek, modern dining room or the more casual patio seating. Speck will serve dinner Tuesday through Sunday, from 5 p.m. until 11 p.m., and lunch Saturday and Sunday, from 11:30 a.m. until 2 p.m. The restaurant will be closed Mondays. For more information, or to make a reservation, please call (215) 925-9500 or click here. You can also follow Speck on Twitter at @speckfood.
More images of dishes that will be served at Speck are after the jump.

Last March, PYT played host to the first-ever Foursquare Swarm in the Philadelphia area. For that event, they had more than 50 users all checking into Foursquare at the same time. Now they’re upping the ante and are trying to create a Super Swarm. To pull it off, they’ll need to have more than 250 all checking in at the same time and same location.
To this end, PYT has joined up with Vitamain Water, Geekadelphia and Radio 104.5 to present the first ever meet-up for the Foursquare Super Swarm Badge. The Super Swarm gathering is at 4 p.m. outside or inside PYT, just before 104.5′s free OK GO concert at the Piazza at Schmidt’s.
There are free T-Shirts for the first 300 check-ins, courtesy of Vitamin Water. The shirts say, “I went to Philly Super Swarm 2010 & all I got was this lousy T-Shirt.” You know you want it!

The MMS Gallery is a new project that aims to showcase creativity provided by everyday people, whether they consider themselves actual artists or not.
And they’re doing it initially with more than 1,000 photo submissions taken with cell phone cameras.
The Gallery’s Mission:
“Perceptions of art are evolving. We believe in making art attainable.
As mobile technology continues to evolve, so does the medium’s relevance in the art world. Some would consider it a travesty to consider the mobile phone as a means to create art. We celebrate it.
Moments that were once overlooked or bypassed because a person didn’t have a camera, can now be captured and shared because of emergence of phone technology. It’s these moments that nurture relevance regardless of whether the person who captured it considers themselves to be an artist.”
MMS Gallery is hosting an opening party tonight, sponsored by Sly Fox and Di Bruno Bros.
You can preview some of the submissions on their Flickr page.
