The Sixers To Host Wilt Chamberlain Night This Friday, March 2 To Honor The 50th Anniversary Of The Sports Legend’s NBA-Record 100-Point Game

All fans at Friday's game will receive a specially mounted 2x2” square of the original court on which Wilt the Stilt scored the record 100 points against the New York Knicks on March 2, 1962. (Photo courtesy Sixers)

This Friday’s Sixers game is a super special one. The team will honor Wilt Chamberlain at their home game against the Golden State, as March 2 marks the 50th anniversary of Chamberlain’s NBA-record, 100-point game.

The record books are even heavier with his accomplishments: he was the only NBA player to score 4,000 points in a season; he set NBA single-game records for most consecutive field goals (18) and most rebounds (55); and he averaged 50.4 points per game and48.5 minutes per game during the 1961-62 season.

To wit, the entire evening this Friday, March 2is dubbed Wilt Chamberlain Night, and there’s a lot in store:

• All fans in attendance will receive a specially mounted 2×2” square of the original court on which Wilt the Stilt (he was 7’1″!) scored the 100 points against the New York Knicks on March 2, 1962. A majority of the court will be preserved for posterity and be used and displayed at the Wells Fargo Center and the Sixers practice facilities in Philly and Hershey. The team will also be donating some of the court to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Massachusetts.

• The 76ers organization will honor the family of the late, great Chamberlain in a special halftime ceremony at Friday’s game.

• Some of his friends and former teammates from the 1961-62 Warriors will be in attendance, and highlight videos will be played throughout the evening.

Fun fact: Chamberlain scored the record-breaking 100 points as a member of the Philadelphia Warriors against the New York Knicks. The Warriors eventually moved to San Fran in 1962 and were later christened the Golden State Warriors in 1971. At the same time, the Syracuse Nationals moved to Pennsylvania and were renamed the Philadelphia 76ers. Chamberlain returned to the Sixers in 1965.

So this anniversary game includes both the Sixers and the Warriors, both of Wilt’s Philadelphia teams!

Tickets to Friday’s game still remain; click here.

The Sixers’ Wilt Chamberlain Night
When: Friday, March 2, 8 p.m.
Where: Wells Fargo Center, 3601 S. Broad Street
Cost: Tickets start at $10
