Philly Beer Week Picks: Fun With Beer At Competitions, Contests And Game Nights During Philadelphia’s Annual Beer Festival, Through June 9

Philly Beer Week swings in to high gear this week, and picking and choosing just which Beer Week events to attend can be a challenge with hundreds and hundreds of events taking place at dozens of venues across the city featuring many, many different local breweries night after night.

We know Beer Week is all about good times, so in honor of all the brew-fueled fun across the city, we took at look at the tons of events with an element of competition — be they 5K runs, spins on game shows or beer trivia nights.

There are Quizzo events practically nightly and an ongoing Twitter hunt, but so many more funky competitions are taking place this week, too.

We’ve rounded up our top picks for Beer Week events where you’ll want to put on your game face.

• Cat Races with Philadelphia Brewing Company: Indulge your curiosity as the “Keepin’ It Local” series heads to Doobies with rare Philadelphia Brewing Co. beers on draft and…cat races (yup, actual cat races!). A portion of the evening’s proceeds from one of drafts will go to Cat Rescue, and note that no kitties will be harmed in the production of the event.

When: Monday, June 3, 6-8 p.m.

• Victory Brewing Company Balderdash at Standard Tap: Play a rousing game of Balderdash at a Victory Brewing Company-sponsored game night at Standard Tap in Northern Liberties tonight. Prizes will be awarded for the best true story, best tall tale, most correct answers and the biggest stumper of the night.

When: Monday, June 3, 8 p.m.-2 a.m.
Where: Standard Tap, 901 N. 2nd Street
Cost: Pay as you go

• Dunk Tank 2013 at London Grill: A Beer Week favorite, the Dunk Tank at London Grill returns offering a chance to soak your favorite brewers and beer personalities including Don “Joe Sixpack” Russell, Carol Stoudts, Casey Hughes of Flying Fish and more. All throws benefit the Philadelphia Animal Welfare Society (PAWS).

When: Tuesday, June 4, 4-6 p.m.
Where: London Grill, 2301 Fairmount Avenue
Cost: Pay as you go

• Cage Match at Alla Spina: Watch representatives from Victory Brewing Company and Brewery Ommegang go head to head in a pairing competition at Alla Spina. The reps are challenged to perfectly pair their beers in a four-course dinner with eight beers (one from each brewery per course). Reserve a spot for dinner to play judge and vote on the winner.

When: Tuesday, June 4, 6 p.m.
Where: Alla Spina, 1410 Mt. Vernon Street

Dunkel Dare at Frankford Hall: Get ready, Double Dare fans. Come out to see host Marc Summers lead a raucous German-beer-knowledge challenge for the second year of Dunkel Dare at Frankford Hall. Four breweries face off, with Great Lakes Brewing Company returning to defend the title, competing against Victory, Stoudt’s and Yards. Plus, The Franklin Institute lends a hand in replicating the messy physical challenges from the original game show.

When: Wednesday, June 5, and Thursday, June 6, 7 p.m.
Where: Frankford Hall, 1210 Frankford Avenue

 Sly Fox Brewery Run For Beer 5K: Join the folks of Sly Fox Brewery for an evening at the races. Head out to join in the relays in Pottstown with live music on the race course and a free Sly Fox Beer to all racers after the race (who are 21 and over, of course). Call 610-327-4843 for more information.

When: Wednesday, June 5, 7-9 p.m.
Where: 331 Circle of Progress, Pottstown and Sly Fox Brewery, 520 Kimberton Road, Phoenixville

 Shark Night at Percy Street Barbecue: Upping the ante from last year’s mechanical bull, Percy Street is bringing in a mechanical shark to see which breweries have nerves of steel. Enjoy craft canned beers and ride the shark yourself starting at 5 p.m. before watching the heated competition for the coveted trophy at 8 p.m.

When: Thursday, June 6, 5-10 p.m.
Where: Percy Street Barbecue, 900 South Street
Cost: Pay as you go

• Philly’s Worst Beer Geek and Backyard Barbecue at Prohibition Taproom: Step up for a blind taste-testing competition to pick out which beers were voted the worst beers in America. The first person to guess all 10 correctly will be dubbed “Phillys Worst Beer Geek,” and take home an armload of prizes. For those who just want to show up to cheer on the tasters, Prohibition will serve up a whole roasted pig, too.

When: Saturday, June 8, 11 a.m.-2 a.m.
Where: Prohibition Taproom, 501 N. 13th Street
Cost: Pay as you go

• Bermuda Triangle Run: Head to Fairmount to run in or witness an entertaining relay race. Pair beer from the Kite and Key, The Bishop’s Collar and St. Stephen’s Green with a run around the hilly streets of Fairmount, and good times are had by all.

When: Saturday, June 8, noon-3 p.m.
