Last night, BMI hosted its R&B/Hip-Hop Awards for 2013, formerly known as the BMI Urban Awards. The performance rights organization brought together top songwriters, producers, and publishers to honor its members’ achievements. Although it took place in the Manhattan Center’s Hammerstein Ballroom in New York City, Philadelphia was definitely in the building!
The night was filled with great energy as Cash Money’s Bryan “Birdman” Williams and Ronald “Slim” Williams were named BMI Icons. There was an awesome musical tribute and the gathering of many of the original Cash Money crew including Lil’ Wayne, Turk, Juvenile and Manny Fresh.
It’s no surprise that Philadelphia native, Andrew “Pop” Wansel and production partner Warren “Oak” Felder were recognized as “Top Producers” at this year’s awards! Together Wansel and Felder have worked on important records this past year including “Fire We Make,” Alicia Keys, “VSOP,” K. Michelle, and many more.
We last caught up with the dynamic duo right here in Philadelphia when Philly 360°, BMI, Hot 107.9, Old School 100.3 and The Recording Academy® Philadelphia Chapter came together to present “How I Wrote That Song” the Philly edition. If you missed it, take a look at the video recap below!
Philly 360° Shout Out: Big congratulations to Pop and Oak!
