Tonight Picks: Opening Night Of The Fringe Festival, Free Movie Screenings, A Whiskey-Fueled Party At The Trestle Inn And More

It’s another lovely evening, Philadelphia, and time to take advantage of a slew of after-dark happenings.

Tonight marks the official start of the nearly month-long 2013 Fringe Festival, bringing a wide range of avant-garde art installations and performances to Philadelphia for the next 18 days.

In addition to progressive performances, two Philadelphia venues hang on to the summer spirit and host outdoor movies, and those who want to get in on spirits of a different nature can head to The Trestle Inn for a birthday celebration for the one-and-only Jack Daniel (of Jack Daniel’s whiskey).

Fringe Festival: It’s the first official day of the multi-week Fringe Festival, and more than a dozen live performances take the stage this evening in neighborhoods all over Philadelphia. Tonight, the Wilma Theater hosts an international dramatic performance in part with the Attis Theater of Greece, Eastern State Penitentiary hosts a lively vaudeville-era performance and that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Schuylkill Banks Movie Night: Moonrise Kingdom is the theme of the evening at the Schuylkill Banks’ free movie night at the Walnut Street Bridge. Catch a free screening of the the Wes Anderson directed film about a tale of young love. Before the screening, which is set for roughly 7:45 p.m., take part in a free raffle from Philadelphia Runner and indulge in snacks and drinks from Dranoff Properties.

Happy Birthday Jack! at The Trestle Inn: Celebrate Jack Daniel’s birthday (the man behind the Tennessee whiskey) in the best way possible — with Jack Daniel’s cocktails and swag. Tonight, the Trestle Inn, hosts a proper birthday party for the liquor legend from 6 to 9 p.m. Tickets are $15 in advance and $20 at the door. Tickets include two Jack Daniel’s cocktails, a cupcake, Jack Daniel’s freebies and a $5 donation to the Philadelphia Animal Welfare Society (PAWS).

Summer Movie Series at City Tap House: City Tap House, University City’s bustling craft beer bar and pub-fare eatery presents its final movie of its summer brewery and film pair-up this evening. Beginning at 8 p.m., check out a screening of Point Break on the patio and a pair-up with Brewery Ommegang. The screening is free, but all beer and movie snacks are pay as you go.

Ars Nova Workshop Presents Secret Keeper: Free and live jazz fills the Rotunda tonight as Ars Nova Workshop celebrates its 14th season. In honor of its season, Ars Nova Workshop brings New York-based duo, Secret Keeper to University City for a free jazz concert at 8 p.m.

Evan’s Fig Stand for City Kitties in Clark Park: After being featured on The Ellen Show, Evan Sweitzer of West Philadelphia brings his fig stand to Clark Park to raise money for City Kitties Rescue, a local group whose mission is to aid cats in need. Stop by the West Philly park beginning at 5 p.m. for fresh figs.
