As Thanksgiving Day approaches, so does the grand opening of annual Philadelphia German-style holiday market Christmas Village in Philadelphia.

Modeled after Germany’s traditional open-air Christmas markets, Philadelphia’a Christmas Village is a daily an outdoor holiday market located in Love Park, right in the heart of Center City.

More than 60 vendors in more than 90 wooden booths, along with two large tents, offer a wide range of international holiday gifts, ornaments, jewelry, toys and high-quality arts and crafts.

And this year, the shopping extravaganza extends through New Year’s Day, providing shoppers with pre- and post-Christmas retail recreation. Along with the extended dates, this year also debuts a Christmas Village lighting ceremony at 5 p.m. daily and an advent calendar sale from December 1 to 24.

This year, too, a heated food tent will be located on the JFK Boulevard side of the park to provide respite from the winter chill.

Enjoy traditional German and European food and sweets like bratwurst with sauerkraut, strudels, pretzels, potato soup and more. You can also stay warm with a mug of hot mulled wine or a cup of hot chocolate for the little ones.

But, the Christmas Village is more than just an outdoor shopping mall. Love Park gets bedecked with thousands of lights, a giant Christmas tree in the center, as well as frequent performances and special events.

Events include the Grand Opening Ceremony on Saturday, November 30 with the original Christkind from Nuremburg, Germany. Then, look forward to the annual tree lighting celebration on Wednesday, December 4. The full event schedule is available online.

The market runs Sunday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Friday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. See below for a full map of the market layout.

And remember, admission is totally free; just pay as you go for gifts and enjoy!
