For those that avoid the predictable Valentine’s Day prix-fixe menus and markups, Izumi restaurant has a more inventive (and arguably lighter) alternative.

On Presidents’ Day this Monday, February 17, the East Passyunk BYO offers an evening of Maki Making, a hands-on activity for couples, singles and anyone who wants to learn the fine art of making delicious and attractive sushi rolls.

As anyone who’s tried it at home can attest, is not easily mastered, so chef Corey Baver will oversee the proceedings with individual instruction on technique.

The cost, $50 per person, includes complimentary Saki Sangria and passed hors d’oeuvres before the actual maki-making business begins.

Of course, guests will get to munch on their rice and nori bound creations, too.

Note that the class is limited to 26 guests, so score a spot soon.
