Huzzzah! With the return of warm weather comes the return of two evening diversions made for lovers of history and nightlife.

Experience the many-layered history of Philadelphia by taking one of Historic Philadelphia’s excellent evening tours: the Tippler’s Tour and Independence After Hours, both of which return for the spring and summer starting this week.

Every Thursday starting on May 22, the Tippler’s Tour pub crawl leads an over-21 group through the streets of Old City, enjoying drinks and a little taste of history at four Colonial and modern-day watering holes.

Enjoy beers, traditional cocktails and appetizer-style snacks as a Colonial guide shares stories of tavern life in Colonial Philadelphia and leads tourgoers in tavern songs. Participating taverns in 2014 include the Salon 401 at Omni Hotel, National Mechanics, The Victoria Freehouse and City Tavern.

New for this year, the Tippler’s Tour welcomes none other than Dr. Benjamin Franklin for the brand-new Ben’s Kites & Flights Tippler’s Tour on Thursdays, May 22-July 3. Starting July 10, the classic Tippler’s Tour: Colonial Tales & Ales returns through September.

For those looking for an even more substantial taste of history, Independence After Hours evening walking tours return for 2014 on Friday, May 23, running every Friday and Saturday evening at 5:30 p.m. through June 7, with additional tours Tuesdays through Saturdays from June 10 through August 16 (note: there are no Independence After Hours Tours on July 3 or 4).

Meeting at the Historic Philadelphia Center, tour-takers start at City Tavern for a three-course dinner before scoring an exclusive opportunity to visit Independence Hall after hours, with no crowds and no lines.

Thanks to a Colonial character host, those on the Independence After Hours tour can “sneak” into the Pennsylvania State House — the building we know as Independence Hall.

Inside the Hall, visitors witness Founding Fathers like John Adams, Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Jefferson deep in discussion over the creation of the Declaration of Independence.
