Pop-Up Dinner Parties In Philadelphia This Thursday, August 21: Dîner En Blanc Returns, Plus Dîner En Noir And Dîner En Sweatpants

Don’t be alarmed if you spot a crowd of 3,400 people dressed completely in white and carting tables and chairs tomorrow night.

This Thursday, August 21 marks the annual Dîner en Blanc event, a worldwide pop-up dining phenomenon celebrating its third year in Philadelphia.

In 2014, the global event will appear in more than 40 cities around the world with tens of thousands of white-clad revelers attending private, picnic parties at to-be-disclosed locations.

In 2012, the Dîner made its debut in Philly when 1300 guests descended upon the secret pop-up location that was revealed the night of the event to be Swann Memorial Fountain in Logan Circle. In 2013, more than 2000 revelers danced the night away on the JFK Bridge in the shadow of 30th Street Station and the Cira Centre.

The mysterious invitation-required event brings together dancing, drinking, picnicking, live music and fashion in a highly-visible location in Philadelphia. Guests are required to dress in white from head-to-toe, bring along a picnic dinner (and drinks!), a picnic table, a white table cloth and white folding chairs. From there, the party really starts.

While tickets for the popular event have long been sold out, non-attendees are bound to come across gaggles of white-clad participants.

But, this year two other events have cropped up in response to Dîner en Blanc: Dîner en Noir and Dîner en Sweatpants.

Like Dîner en Blanc, Dîner en Noir is a now sold-out BYO-everything pop-up affair at a to-be-disclosed location. A dinner for around 500, the key difference from Dîner en Blanc is that it’s locally conceived and any profits from Dîner en Noir will be donated to local hunger-relief non-profit organization Philabundance.

Still looking to join in a dîner-going? Head to Dîner en Sweatpants in Clark Park. Organized by ticketing gurus TicketLeap, sweatpants-clad (or any attired!) partygoers should bring any color blanket and a picnic dinner, or pick up eats from the on-site farmers’ market or food trucks.

Really, all three dinners embrace the joie de vivre of summer in Philadelphia.
