With an astounding array of more than 3,000 murals on display throughout Philadelphia, the City of Brotherly Love is often referred to as the “City of Murals,” thanks to the efforts of the City of Philadelphia Mural Arts Program.
As the spring season commences, the hugely popular Mural Arts Program tours have launched with upgraded excursions for the 2015 season, offering great opportunities to take in the thousands of murals in the city.
Engaging journeys are now available throughout the spring and summer, with most tours now departing from a brand-new Mural Arts Program location at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (PAFA) in the Hamilton Building on North Broad Street.
In 2015, regularly scheduled trolley, walking and public transit tours are available every weekend throughout the spring, with additional tour times supplementing the schedule this summer starting in June.
In April and May, various tours are offered every Saturday and Sunday, including trolley tours of Center City and the Mural Masterpieces tour, which has been split geographically into two tours (east and west) for 2015.
Also, tourgoers should look for Mural Mile walking tours, Love Letter train tours, a monthly Second Sunday Specialty Tour, a Murals & Mosaics walking tour in partnership with Isaiah Zagar’s Philadelphia’s Magic Gardens and a Segway Mural tour through the Philly Tour Hub.
During each tour, a professionally trained Mural Arts Program guide offers up information on the process of creating the murals, the community surrounding each mural and more on the 30-year history of the Mural Arts Program.
All tours leave from PAFA’s Hamilton Building unless otherwise noted, and thanks to the partnership between PAFA and Mural Arts, all 2015 Mural Arts tour guests will receive a $5 discount off general admission to the museum and PAFA members will receive a $5 discount on Mural Arts Tours.
