Featuring dynamic dancing, funky songs and a tale of fame and love, Memphis bursts off the stage — straight into your heart.
Inspired by real-life events, the Tony Award-winning musical takes the stage at Walnut Street Theatre through July 12.
Set in the 1950s, the story recalls a time when segregation was still prevalent in America’s southern states. The show follows white radio DJ, Huey Calhoun, who wants to break the color barrier and bring soul music to the masses. He also wants to promote a young black singer who captures both his ear and heart. Calhoun encounters big ups and downs as he pursues his dreams.
Winner of the Tony Award for Best Musical, Memphis features an original score by Bon Jovi’s David Bryan that incorporates all of the iconic sounds of the era: the funk of James Brown, the guitar of Chuck Berry, the pop of the girl groups and more.
An exuberant show with rip-roaring music and tightly choreographed dance, it’s fully entertaining from start to finish.
Tickets, starting at $25, are available online.
