It’s no secret that we here at Uwishunu are big fans of Philadelphia’s phenomenal food truck community.
And this Saturday, the local street food scene hits a high note with the annual battle royal — The Philadelphia Vendy Awards.
Now in its fifth year of presenting serious bragging rights to Philly’s top street vendors, the Philadelphia Vendy Awards return this Saturday, June 13 to name this year’s top curbside chef with a daylong event at a new location, the JFK Bridge overlooking the Schuylkill River.
Since last year, street-food vending has only increased in popularity in Philadelphia. Need an example? Just look to the tens of thousands of folks who attended last month’s Night Market Philadelphia and the ever-increasing crowds to come out to pick up food-truck fare at LOVE Park, The Oval and beyond.
After a public round of nominations, a group of 14 finalists are now ready to compete for the coveted Philadelphia Vendy Cup. From makers of decadent sweets to dishers of your go-to lunch, the finalists represent a great range of the mobile food vendors of Philadelphia.
Food Truck Finalists
Finalists contending for the Vendy Cup include Foolish Waffles, The Flying Deutschman, Mom-Mom’s Polish Food Cart and Butter Food Truck.
In the “sweet” category, competitors include Pound Cake Heaven, Sweet Lavender, UndrGrnd Donuts, Jimmies Cupcake Co. and Luscious Bakery.
This year, newbie vendors competing for Rookie of the Year are Rigatoni’s Mobile Crab Cakes, Jerry’s Kitchen, Philly Fry, SeoulFul Philly, and Las Olas Philly.
Tasked with deciding which truck will receive this year’s Vendy Cup, Uwishunu will be on the street as a judge (yup, yours truly will be out there!), as well as local culinary pros including Jonathan Deutsch, Ph.D., Director of the Culinary Arts and Food Science program at Drexel University; Bryan Mayer, owner of Philadelphia’s Kensington Quarters restaurant and butcher shop; Brian O’Reilly, Sly Fox Brewing Company brewmaster; and Jessica Moore, Philly CowShare founder.
Get $10 Off Tickets
Come out on Saturday to get your fill of food truck fare. Tickets to the event include all the food you can eat from the finalists, unlimited Sly Fox brews, wines by Santa Cristina and a vote for the People’s Choice, Rookie of the Year and Best Dessert awards.
Organized by The Street Vendor Project of the Urban Justice Center, the Vendys not only shine a light on some of Philadelphia’s most talented street-food chefs, but also serve as a fundraiser for the Philadelphia Mobile Food Association and for The Food Trust, the region’s non-profit working to improve the health of children and adults while increasing access to good nutrition.
Tickets, $65, are tax-deductible and available online. Note that tickets at the door (if available) will be $5 more.
Now, though, Uwishunu readers can use code STREETFOOD for $10 off! We suggest you score tickets now, as the food truck fest has a history of selling out.
See you out there!
