Eight Not-To-Miss Holiday Events This Weekend In Philadelphia

Soaking up the holiday season in Philadelphia is a cinch with plenty of Christmas events and holiday activities continuing this weekend.

From a snow-filled festival to a seaworthy parade of lights, Philly hosts a bundle of holiday happenings on Saturday, December 12 and Sunday, December 13.

Here are five festive holiday events happening this weekend in Philadelphia.

Parade of Lights

This weekend, the Delaware River will glow with holiday cheer. On Saturday, check out one of Philly’s brightest holiday celebrations: the Independence Seaport Museum’s Parade of Lights. The procession will include both working and pleasure boats, all of which will be adorned with twinkling holiday lights and festive decorations. While the parade is visible from several spots along the Delaware River, museum guests will no doubt get the best view from the second-floor balcony. Admission to the museum costs $15 for adults and $10 for seniors/children/students/military. Museum members and kids under 2 get in for free.

Arctic Avenue in East Passyunk

All day long on Saturday, East Passyunk Avenue hosts a neighborhood-wide winter festival with live ice sculpture carvings at more than 40 locations along the Avenue. In addition to the ice spectacle, visitors to the Avenue on Saturday can take part in a scavenger hunt, a Reyka Vodka cocktail crawl and score Second Saturday deals at participating shops and restaurants. All of the festivities are free, with treats available on a pay as you go basis. For a complete list of specials, check here.

Chestnut Hill Holiday Parade

Head to the hill to cheer on or join in a holiday parade this Saturday morning. Starting at Chestnut Hill Avenue, tons of area kids, musicians, community groups, local police and fire companies, antique cars, Mummers and none other than the Phillie Phanatic will parade on Germantown Avenue. The parade wraps up at the Market at the Fareway (formerly Chestnut Hill Farmer’s Market) with live music, a bucket drum corps, an ice sculpture, treats and photos with Santa.

When: Saturday, December 12; Parade, 9-10 a.m.
Where: Germantown Avenue, Chestnut Hill Avenue to Southampton Avenue

Winter Wonderland at Smith Playground and Playhouse

Bring the wee ones to the decked-for-the-holidays Smith Playground in Fairmount Park for a day of winter festivities including an ice carving demonstration, s’mores roasting, live music, arts and crafts and more treats. The party is free for Smith members and $10 per child for non-members. Admission for adults is free, but they must be accompanied by a child.

When: Saturday, December 12, 4-6 p.m.

Santa Paws at the Palomar

Philly’s hip and pet-friendly hotel, Hotel Palomar Philadelphia, hosts its annual Santa Paws pet event this weekend. Man’s best friend can take to Santa’s lap to pose for festive and furry photos with Santa. A photographer will be on-hand to snap photos and all participants receive a swag bag with treats. The event is free, but the hotel will be accepting donations on behalf of the Saved Me pet adoption group.

When: Saturday, December 12, 1-4 p.m.

Holiday Punk Rock Flea Market

The holiday Punk Rock Flea Market lands in Callowhill on December 11, 12 and 13 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Browse the goods of more than 700 vendors selling old records, clothes, art, music, food, junk, bicycles, stereo equipment, instruments, automobiles, tools, posters, furniture, computers, skateboards and lots of other stuff. For this holiday edition, $3 entry donation provides access on Saturday and Sunday, and entry on Friday night is free.

Rittenhouse Menorah Lighting

As dusk settles over Rittenhouse Square, prayers will be sung and the candles will be lit on one of the city’s largest menorahs.

When: Sunday, December 13, 5:30 p.m.
Where: Rittenhouse Square, 18th and Walnut streets

Fitler Square Christmas Tree Lighting

The charming, sculpture-filled Fitler Square celebrates the annual lighting of its Christmas free at dusk this Sunday. Denizens of the neighborhood gather around the central fountain to applaud the lighting, and then Santa will arrive to hear wishes from the little ones. Plus, there will be live music from The Philadelphia School a cappela group, cookies and warm cider.
