Philadelphia Culinary Stars Win Big At The 2017 James Beard Foundation Awards

Philly's own Starr, Solomonov and Vernick were honored with James Beard Foundation Awards...

Delicious news! Philly won big at the annual James Beard Foundation Awards this year.

Major congratulations are in order for some of the brightest stars of Philadelphia’s culinary scene: chef Michael Solomonov, restauranteur Stephen Starr and chef Greg Vernick.

Philly’s own chef Michael Solomonov, restauranteur Stephen Starr and chef Greg Vernick each took home a prestigious James Beard Foundation Award. Congrats!

All three culinary luminaries took home James Beard Foundation Awards at the May 1 ceremony, making 2017 the first year since 2011 that Philadelphia hospitality pros have returned victorious from the “Oscars of the food world.”

The wins are, of course, extremely well deserved, with “Outstanding Chef” of the year going to the brilliant Michael Solomonov of Zahav, Federal Donuts and the CookNSolo restaurant group.

No less thrilling, the prolific Stephen Starr of the Starr Restaurants empire finally walked away with the award for “Best Restaurateur in America” (after four previous nominations) and his new New York restaurants, Le Coucou, won “Best New Restaurant.”

The wonderful chef Greg Vernick of Vernick Food & Drink won the award for “Best Chef, Mid-Atlantic” after three previous noms. Sam Calagione of nearby Dogfish Head Brewery won the Beard for outstanding wine, spirits, or beer professional (his seventh nomination).

Check out the full list of winners here.

We recommend scoring reservations now at any and all of Philadephia’s newest James Beard Award-winning restaurants.

Let’s hear it for Philly’s winners!
