Philly Beer Week Is Back With 350+ Sudsy Events, June 1-10

Our picks for the 12 essential goings-on during the annual celebration of the city's vibrant beer culture...

Calling all hop-heads, sours-seekers and just regular fans of a stellar brew — your favorite event of the year is here.

Philly Beer Week is back from June 1 to 10, bringing more than 350 (!) events to bars, restaurants, beer gardens, concert venues, rivers and other interesting venues throughout Philadelphia and the surrounding region.

The 11th annual celebration of the city’s vibrant beer culture features events ranging from tastings of locally crafted brews in cozy neighborhood taprooms to educational offerings such as guided tastings, lectures and prix-fixe beer-pairing dinners.

Below we’ve earmarked a dozen highlights, featuring everything from big beer fests and parties to quiet canoe treks on the Schuylkill River. But note that there are a TON of events that are worth checking out during 2018’s Philly Beer Week.

Hammer of Glory (HOG) Tour

On Friday, June 1, the symbol of Philly Beer Week — a big branded keg mallet called the Hammer of Glory, or "HOG" — makes its way around the city for appearances at more than 20 bars, with special happenings (and beers!) along the way (e.g. a "ballet" at Standard Tap, a watermelon smashing at Grey Lodge Pub). For $15, relay spectators can grab a ticket and trail the hammer around town on a bus to Hop Angel Brauhaus, Saint Benjamin Brewery, Garage Passyunk and more before the HOG makes its way to Opening Tap at The Fillmore.

Opening Tap at The Fillmore

The big Opening Tap kickoff party hits Fishtown music venue The Fillmore on the evening of Friday, June 1. The official Beer Week launch event includes a tasting celebration with more than 60 brewers pouring tons of suds — including Philly Beer Week collaboration beers and brews from rare-for-Philly breweries— and music, including a performance from Chill Moody. Cheers!

Philly Loves Beer Official Beer Garden at Uptown Beer Garden

Center City outdoor space Uptown Beer Garden serves as the Official Philly Loves Beer Garden once again this year, with events almost every night of Beer Week. Highlights include Lehigh AF (June 8) with some of the best breweries from north of Philly (e.g. Funk Brewing, Weyerbacher) and three (!) barbecue events: a Hawaiian-inspired Luau BBQ (June 2), the aptly titled 2SPBQ (June 3) featuring 10 2SP Brewing Company beers on tap and a weekend cook-out (June 9-10) featuring beers from Half Acre (Chicago) and Carton (New Jersey).

Pints & Pin-Ups Block Party at Varga Bar

Now in its eighth year, the Pints & Pin-Ups Block Party at Varga Bar takes over 10th Street at Spruce Street with a live music, a wing-eating contest and — of course — pints and pints of craft beer. The block party also includes the bar's annual search for its calendar girls.

It's a Firkin Riot at Johnny Brenda's

Head to Britain by way of Fishtown for this ninth annual event celebrating food, music and beer from across the Atlantic. Johnny Brenda's puts its custom-made firkin rack to good use, serving six cask beers at a time while DJs spin British rock and the kitchen dishes out English fare like fish and chips and meat pies.

The Alchemist at Philly Beer Week at Monk's Cafe

Every craft beer lover's must-drink list includes the almost-never-distributed Heady Topper double IPA from Vermont's The Alchemist. On Saturday, June 2, Alchemist owner/brewer John Kimmich visits Monk's Cafe to hand-deliver six kinds of Alchemist beers — including Heady Topper — that are rarely if ever available outside of the Green Mountain State. Note: This event is cash only!

Beer Under the Big Top

Beer Under the Big Top delivers circus-style fun and games alongside samples of more than 150 beers from local and national craft brewers. While sipping on brews and eating food truck fare at the Philadelphia Navy Yard, guests can marvel at stilt walkers, sword swallowers, contortionists and jugglers for a truly unforgettable experience.

Tailgate Olympics at Devil's Den

Maybe you can't drink your favorite brewers under the table — but how's your ladder golf game? Craft beer bar and restaurant Devil's Den invites residents and visitors to compete against brewers from Weyerbacher, Yards, 2SP, Evil Genius and Love City in classic tailgate games like baggo, can jam, beer pong and more. Go for the gold!

The Wild Brunch at Cinder

Wild and sour beers rule the day(s) during four Wild Brunch events at Center City's Cinder. The event, which runs June 2-3 as well as June 9-10, features different tap lists each weekend, each featuring 14 beers from breweries rarely seen in Philly, including Anchorage Brewing Company, OEC Brewing and Italy's LoverBeer. Can't make brunch? Cinder's Late Night Funk events (also on June 2-3 & 9-10, but kicking off at 10 p.m.) feature the same tap lists.

Beer and Boats at Bartram's Garden

Take a break from the bar and celebrate Philly Beer Week on the Schuylkill River at beautiful Bartram's Garden. A $15 ticket scores attendees their first beer and a boat or kayak excursion out onto the Schuylkill River. Yup, all instruction and equipment is provided and kiddos boat for free with a parent or guardian! Breweries include Cartesian Brewing, Crime & Punishment Brewing Co., Point Breeze Brewing and more.

Canwood Derby at Good Dog Bar

Local brewing heavyweights Sly Fox and Troegs host the annual Canwood Derby Race at Good Dog Bar on Friday, June 8. Take your pinewood derby car (which must include a 12-ounce beer can in the design!) for a spin around the custom racetrack starting at 7 p.m. Check here for official rules if you're looking to race.

Fishtown FestivAle (With Fireworks!)

It's all about celebrating the neighborhood during the annual Fishtown FestivAle, an alfresco fiesta on Frankford Avenue in Fishtown. Attendees can buy beer and bites from more than 70 vendors and 20 local spots like Frankford Hall, Kensington Quarters, Fette Sau, Barcade and Sancho Pistola's, plus enjoy all sorts of fun like carnival games (including a dunk tank!), local art and DJ sets. At dusk, catch a fireworks show on the Delaware River sponsored by SugarHouse Casino.
