The LOVE Sculpture
Officially known as JFK Plaza, LOVE Park — located at N. 15th Street and John F. Kennedy Boulevard in Center City Philadelphia — gets its nickname from Robert Indiana’s iconic LOVE statue, which has resided in the space almost continuously since 1976.
The sculpture has been restored and updated to coincide with the park’s improvements. The Instagram-friendly piece now dons green, purple and red, the colors that the artist originally intended. (The new clean-up work fixed a previous restoration’s mistake of using blue instead of purple.) The restoration was a project of the City of Philadelphia’s Office of Arts, Culture and the Creative Economy, the same team that oversees all of Philly’s public art.
Thanks to a $250,000 gift from Bank of America, a new plaza on the southwest end of the park is a perfect backdrop for the famous sculpture.
Additional enhancements to the park help create a unique and inviting place for locals and visitors. The space now includes more green areas, including a great lawn and multiple gardens. Seating, pathways, access points and public restrooms make the park accessible and accommodating. A high-tech water feature includes lighting and jets to create an unforgettable visual display.
With the new look comes added programming, like “Lunch in LOVE“, where food trucks will set up on site from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. on weekdays. Adjacent to the trucks, cafe tables and chairs make up an alfresco dining area.
A state-of-the-art Welcome Center will be added to the park later this year.
Opening Day and Party in the Park Fundraiser
While the park is already open to pedestrians, the official ribbon cutting on the completed project will take place at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, May 30.
Later that evening, the newly formed Friends of LOVE Park will hold its first fundraiser on site from 6-8 p.m, complete with music from Philly’s own DJ Jazzy Jeff, an open bar, bites from local food trucks, raffle prizes and more. Tickets are on sale now starting at $100, and proceeds from the event will go toward maintaining the park and providing free programming throughout the year.
Let’s spread the love.
