Summer Sounds In The Historic District Free Music Series Kicks Off Friday, June 1

All summer long, catch free live-music events throughout Philadelphia’s Historic District...

Summertime in Philadelphia means blockbuster street festivals, sweet water ice and cool outdoor concerts.

This summer, though, visitors to Philadelphia’s Historic District can enjoy even more in the way of live tunes with the launch of Summer Sounds in the Historic District, a free outdoor music series curated by VISIT PHILADELPHIA.

  • Summer Sounds in the Historic District includes 50 live-music events in Philadelphia’s Historic District during summer 2018.
  • All events are free and open to the public.
  • Music events occur at more than a dozen locations throughout the district.
  • For the complete Summer Sounds in the Historic District schedule, check here.

From June 1 through September 7, more than 50 live musical performances — both long-popular concerts and new programming — make the district’s parks, plazas and patios come alive.

Musical events pop up at more than a dozen different locations in the Historic District, amounting to more than 50 free live-music events throughout June, July and August.

The Live-Music Events

Jazz, DJ tunes, Latin grooves and even the sweet sounds of a symphony will fill outdoor locations from FringeArts located along the Delaware River waterfront to the Philadelphia History Museum at the Atwater Kent on 7th Street.

Nine event series make up Summer Sounds in the Historic District, including new programming like We Got the Beats traveling DJ series and Summer Sounds on the Square at Franklin Square.

Returning music moments include the revival of Who Got the Jazz, a locally loved jazz tribute series, and Smooth Jazz Summer Nights concerts that highlight renowned jazz and blues musicians from across the globe.

The Summer Sounds in the Historic District music series delivers free tunes all summer long at nearly a dozen locations in Old City, Society Hill and along the Delaware River waterfront.

Kicking off on Friday, June 1, We Got the Beats gets the summer series started in a major way, bringing out two DJs to play two different genres of tunes. The launch event stars Matthew Law and Rich Medina, who will play from 6 to 10 p.m. at Spruce Street Harbor Park, the amazing urban beach sponsored by Univest. The DJ series continues on the first Friday of every month at other district spots like FringeArts and Franklin Square.

Next up? Who Got the Jazz runs every Wednesday night, Waterfront Sessions hits every Thursday night and Wawa Welcome America puts on three Concerts on Independence sponsored by Aetna as part of its week-long Fourth of July celebration. Many more free concert series bring the sounds of jazz, blues, rock, pop, zydeco, classical and folk music to the district throughout the summer.

Also, listen up for Street Corner Symphonies by the Philadelphia Jazz Project. This five-piece band will do their thing at popular spots throughout the Historic District on select weekdays June through August.

Essentially, visitors can now catch free live music almost any night of the summer in Philadelphia’s Historic District.
