New West Philadelphia Mural Pays Homage To Philly Icon Will Smith

From "West Philadelphia born and raised" to an iconic mural...

Will Smith will live on forever thanks to a stunning mural on the side of a school in West Philadelphia.

The legendary actor, musician and philanthropist is the subject of a new mural by British artist Richard Wilson.

The mural, located on a wall outside of the Global Leadership Academy Charter School (4601 W. Girard Avenue), features Smith sitting down in a blue suit and Air Jordan 3 sneakers.

To show his appreciation for having a mural painted in his honor, Smith created a five-minute video documenting the creation of the mural, his mother’s reaction and more.

About the Mural

According to muralist Richard Wilson, the mural is heavily influenced by visual artist Kehinde Wiley’s portrait of former president Barack Obama.

That the Will Smith mural is on the wall of West Philadelphia’s Global Leadership Academy Charter School is no accident: Wilson wanted to place the mural in a spot where kids in West Philadelphia could see it and be inspired.

Since its creation, the 65-foot-tall mural has received praise from Smith’s mother, his longtime friend and business partner Charlie Mack and several local residents.

Check out the video here and visit the mural in person at 4601 W. Girard Avenue. You don’t have to be “West Philadelphia born and raised” to pay respects to a Philly legend.
